Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,

Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,

Silence the pianos and with muffled drum

Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

诗歌简介

这首诗歌初次发表于1936年。由于出现在1994年上映的著名英国电影《四个婚礼一个葬礼》中而广为人知。这是一首在葬礼上献给挚爱亡者的诗歌。

在第一诗节中，诗歌里要求消去一切声音：时钟、电话、钢琴声......

因为随着挚爱之人的逝去，这些事情和艺术欣赏都不再有意义；在第二节，象征和平的鸽子和维护秩序的警察也沉浸在哀悼中；在第三节，哀悼者坦陈逝者是自己生命里的一切，读来令人心痛；最后一节的悲伤达到顶峰：逝者的离去带走了自己存在的全部理由，哀伤溢出纸面。

整首诗中那泛滥的、毫不节制的悲痛让人心碎不已。
